Workshop and Training Objectives

These are the session objectives that we used for the Trainer workshop. However, it is unlikely that the length and format of the training you do with young people will follow the same pattern.  The following suggestions are ‘building blocks’ that can stand alone or be combined in different ways.

What is internet radio?

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Explain the major differences between broadcast radio and internet radio
  • Describe simply how internet radio works and what equipment is needed
  • Explore the potential for using internet radio to develop social and pre-employment skills with young people

Technical workshop 1: Set up

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Identify the component parts of an internet radio set up
  • Connect the kit together
  • Test the kit

Technical workshop 2: Mixing and streaming a live programme including different input sources.

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • use the hardware and software
  • operate the mixing desk
  • use a range of techniques needed for live and recorded programmes
  • identify common problems and their solutions
  • identify the generic skills that young people can learn

Technical workshop 3:  Pre / Post production editing

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • ‘Clean’ and edit the recording of a programme
  • Create a podcast of the programme
  • Upload the podcast to a website
  • identify the generic skills that young people can learn

Music and Soundscape

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Source, evaluate and choose open source music suitable for broadcasting during the show
  • Explain the copyrighting issues as they affect broadcasted material
  • Select and cut appropriate extracts
  • Link music to subject content
  • create, record and store a sound library
  • identify the generic skills that young people can learn

Jingles

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Use Garage Band to prepare a series of appropriate jingles
  • identify other free software that young people could use
  • identify the generic skills that young people can learn

Writing and presenting content

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Describe the job of the presenter – setting the scene, introducing content, introducing guests, creating links etc
  • Compare writing for radio with other media
  • Research and write short news items suitable for their station
  • Describe ways they could ‘evidence’ or back up their items
  • Write a headline for their item
  • Produce copy for a presenter
  • Mark up copy
  • Sequence items in the programme
  • use their voice appropriately and effectively
  • Present an item on air
  • identify the generic skills that young people can learn

Interviews and features

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • create a storyboard
  • select and sequence content
  • research background material
  • decide on the purpose of an interview
  • use a range of questioning techniques
  • close / conclude an interview
  • identify common problems and possible solutions
  • identify the generic skills that young people can learn

Vox Pops

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Explain what is meant by the term ‘vox pops’
  • Prepare schedule info cards for interviewees
  • Identify rich environments for interviews
  • List some useful questions types to elicit rich responses
  • Discuss some of the ‘do’s and don’t’s’ and some common pitfalls.
  • Edit interviews
  • identify the generic skills that young people can learn

Marketing and publicity

At the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Identify social media outlets for publicity
  • Describe the use of social networks for disseminating information
  • Work with young people to create simple logos and posters for advertising purposes
  • Identify opportunities for establishing an image / identity
  • Explain the need to have a webspace to host a podcast
  • identify the generic skills that young people can lear
